Martin Bester’s #Kissing Experience - Is Kissing for Every Culture? @JacarandaFM

Hi Friends,

A kiss, a smooch, a soentjie or whatever you call it – some cultures either embrace or loathe this act of affection. Martin Bester went on a kissing prank at the Jacaranda FM studios today and amongst those pranked were The Late Show host, Carla Mackenzie and Liesl Laurie, Saturday Breakfast Show host (former Miss South Africa and World 2015) who gave Martin a run for his money and smooched him right back!

For many, kissing comes with one’s culture and Carla shares the same sentiments. She’s a lover at heart and quite generous with hugs to close friends and colleagues – when it comes to family, she also prefers an endearing kiss. In South Africa, grandparents and other close relatives embrace one another with kisses on the lips to show their affection.

According to some cultures, kissing on the lips is reserved for people who are romantically involved or shared between close relatives.

Here are some interesting kissing global facts:
  • The first on-screen kiss was shot in 1896 by the Edison Company. Titled The May Irwin-John C. Rice Kiss, the film was 30 seconds long and consisted entirely of a man and a woman kissing close up.
  • French kissing involves 34 facial muscles. A pucker kiss involves only two
  • The Romans created three categories of kissing: (1) Osculum, a kiss on the cheek, (2) Basium, a kiss on the lips, and (3) Savolium, a deep kiss.
  • Kissing may have originated when mothers orally passed chewed solid food to their infants during weaning.
  • Kissing at the conclusion of a wedding ceremony can be traced to ancient Roman tradition where a kiss was used to sign contract.
