Product Review 17: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 5G

Hi Friends,

Samsung has two launch cycles where in one they launch their foldable and another one where they launch the latest S series of smartphones. Along with that they also have intermediate launch events where they do the A series in some countries, M series in another and also S Series FE versions as well.

Product Review 17: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 5G

I had my hands on the latest released Galaxy Z Fold6 for 3 weeks around the Navratri - Diwali Festive season and I totally loved using the same. I also got the same in Pink colour so it was a little bit odd to carry but as it was not mine to keep so I didn't bother too much. No one also said anything to me as well as I clicked photographs in all the events I attended during the whole month of October 2024, the last being the Dell Tech Forum CXO Lunch as well. But when you have one of the most valuable phones in your hands, I don't think people will speak up as they will think that you are someone of power or an achiever whom they don't want to say anything.

Coming back to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 5G smartphone, the first thing you will observe if you have used the previous versions is that it's much lighter than the others. The second thing to notice will be that there is no space between the two sides of the screen when folded. Thirdly, As you open the full screen the the middle line on the screen doesn't feel in your fingers like previous generations as the aluminium hinges have been enhanced and the line is not visible as well while watching videos or taking photos etc.

There is no last one as there are so many more that are launched in this range of smartphones which I am going to discuss further in my blog post or easy way if you want to see the video review. I also posted some of the thousands of photos I took using the camera at the end of the video.

First things first, it's really easy to set up any of the Samsung Galaxy smartphones using the Smart Switch or directly as a new device. This review unit was already ON so I directly got the main wallpaper wakeup screen so I just had to insert my Google and Samsung registered emails. It was much faster as the processor is the same as the S24 Ultra which is Snapdragon 8 Gen3 Mobile platform for Galaxy.

Once you set up then you can easily go to either Google Playstore or Samsung Store to get some of the free apps like WhatsApp which you may need in your day-to-day usage of the phone. During this time, you will observe that the battery gets a little bit warm in the older generations of phones but not on this one. During my whole review period, I didn't see it getting warmer at all despite heavy use of phone, screen, camera and video editing.

The battery doesn't change from 4400mAh (two of them inside the body) but there are a lot of savings that came from the adaptive refresh rate of 1-120 Hz on both the cover and main screen along with various software and hardware performance enhancements. The phone definitely lasted me a whole day without worrying about charging it during the afternoon or evening. When I use any phone, I am using it fully as you will see from the 3000+ photos/videos I took in just 20-25 days. During the month of October 2024, I posted around 115 YouTube Shorts that fetched me around 200k views as well.

This is the fun part of using this extra-long 7.6-inch screen that gets folded as well to make it easier to carry. This is a great way to watch all the lovely YouTube videos I create or any from your favourite creator along with a lot of web series and movies making this a perfect entertainment device. I found the speakers to be a little bit faded as compared to the previous versions. This phone has direct singular openings as compared to the circular 10 dotted grills. This I think made it more susceptible to getting blocked by your hands or the surface you put it on. If you do not change the orientation, you will find it difficult to hear even at full volume.

The screens that Samsung provides you is a magical experience on most of their devices especially this one. The colours are vivid, the brightness is top-notch even in the direct sunlight, and the graphics and text look clear and crisp. Sometimes you feel that your eyes have been watching bad VGA display in your previous phone when you switch to the new Galaxy Z Fold6. It's a device that has a Kindle, PSP, Office tools, Tablet, Pencil and smartphone merged into one along with a camera that is suitable in case you want to shoot something in the air on your business trips.

Coming to the Artificial Intelligence features that Samsung calls Galaxy AI, this particular version comes with all of them enabled along with the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 version. All others even the S 24 Ultra series don't have all of them as well. But it's just a single feature that's missing in S24 Ultra and that's Drawing Assist. But as this is just a software-based thing, sooner or later it will come to other compatible phones. My older generations of Samsung smartphones including Z Flip3 and Note 20 only have the Circle to Search feature enabled as part of AI as it doesn't have the processing capabilities to do the other Galaxy AI things.

It's super fast on this phone as I showcase the same in the video as well. There is so much more you can do using the S Pen which didn't come along with the review unit. You can combine the power of S Pen and Galaxy AI to create a lot of new images generated by AI and sketch to draw on the photos to create a new version of the image. You can get translation on the go, on the call, in the meeting. It can even make notes while you attend any call. These things are really powerful which makes it a productivity master which really fulfils the use case for travelling businessmen or executives who run their business on phones or are away from their laptops etc. This particular use of Galaxy Z Fold6 is one of the most highlighted features that lead to all the sales for sure for Samsung. Though you have the CoPilot in the newer laptops if you are not using one, then Galaxy Z Fold6 is your best bet as it's portable, easy to use and powerful enough to use it any way you want.

There is definitely a market for phablets that Samsung brought to the market a long time ago and they monopolised the market too. There are a lot of Chinese brands including Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Tecno, OnePlus and Honor brought their slimmer versions to compete against either the Z Fold or Z Flip series. Google too took some time to create its own foldable as well. These companies are making thinner, slimmer foldable that people like as well. In this competitive world, Samsung has to continuously enhance their Z Fold series as the phone is just shy of the ZAR 45000 price range and when you don't get the same kind of camera as in the S Ultra series, it breaks my heart every time they launch the next generation.

Samsung doesn't have to worry about thinking that either of their phones will cannibalize the other series but the markets are totally different and it all depends on the customer's choice as well. As a brand, you have to provide the best in all the versions based on the price charged so that customers get the best value and choice in all the top variants of smartphones. If you fail to provide the same then the other brands will definitely be looking for their extra-hardware products (for example 3X folded smartphone) to take over the market created and ruled by Samsung. My thinking as a customer will be then to decide if I want to combine my content creation journey (S24 Ultra) with the same capable phone considering Galaxy Z Fold6 also have the same camera capabilities to include the bigger screen, Galaxy AI, multi-tasking and office productivity on the go. If yes, then I will pay around ZAR 50000 for Fold and if not then I will just restrict myself to ZAR 30000 for the S Ultra series. Currently, you have to leave one to get another hence the search for a great phone continues!

Stationery Review 129 - Snowhite Fountain Pen FP13 (EF) ZAR 7

Hi Friends,

I have showcased to you the whole range of Fountain Pens from Snowhite. This is another Chinese manufacturer that creates really nice products for students around the world. I got in touch with them at the Stationery Expo in Johannesburg, South Africa. I have reviewed a lot of their fountain pens on my channel that you can check in the Stationery Playlist and even search the same on the blog here as well.

Stationery Review 129 - Snowhite Fountain Pen FP13 (EF) ZAR 7

Snowhite Fountain Pens are good for the starters and students. They really make fountain pens which write nice and are filled with ink as mostly they are disposable fountain pens. This one was bought locally at China Mall, Mellow Shop at F9 in Johannesburg. The packet of 12 pens is around ZAR 85 only which means that each pen is ZAR 7 only.

I really loved these ones but I have seen better pens from Snowhite. These are the only ones that are available at Mellow in China Mall and the whole range has not yet arrived here in South Africa. The same is available at Ali Express App or maybe Temu but I have never shopped at Temu yet.

Stationery Review 128 - Deli Think 0.5mm Roller Pen

Hi Guys,

Deli Stationery is one of my favourite brands from China. I have reviewed a lot of their products that I generally buy from Mellows, F09 Shop in China Mall, Amalgam, Production Road, Johannesburg, South Africa. I think it's the cheapest there but you can also buy a lot of their products from Value Co Stores. The nearest one I could find is in Fourways Mall but I have never visited them yet. They also have a lot of Instagram contests on behalf of Deli Stationers.

Stationery Review 128 - Deli Think 0.5mm Roller Pen

Coming back to these Deli Think Roller Pens that come in this 8-pack variant of different coloured inks. There is regular versions of Blue, Red, Green and Black along with Pink, Turquoise, Purple and Orange as extra variants. The nib tip is 0.5mm and the flow is consistent and good. They are perfect if you can't afford the expensive roller pens from other brands. This set of 8 is around ZAR 60 at the China Mall. I really loved the extra colours as they are really brilliant and I like the ones that gets popped on the paper so that your eyes catches the same.

BIC Celebrates Global Education Week in Partnership with RW Fick Secondary

Hi Guys,

Transforming Learning Spaces for South Africa’s Future Leaders

BIC, a world leader in stationery, recently celebrated Global Education Week to transform learning spaces at RW Fick Secondary School in Bosmont, Johannesburg. Partnering with Bata Toughees, the company refurbished school facilities and provided students with some of the necessary resources to attend school and perform, including writing tools and a new pair of shoes for each student.

The activity stems from BIC’s global commitment to improving learning conditions for 250 million students by 2025. In South Africa, this is translated through the company’s local Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Together We Can Make the Future Write, which speaks to the school dropout crisis in the country, reaching an alarming rate of 41%. BIC’s flagship initiative, Buy a Pen Donate a Pen, directly contributes to the CSR drive, aiming to put a pen in the hand of every student in need for every BIC pen sold. Bata Toughees joined BIC’s CSR movement to contribute towards the school dropout challenge, as a lack of resources is believed to be a major contributor to the high dropout rate.

Lillian Henderson, Marketing Director, Southern and East Africa at BIC, said, “As a leader in stationery, and a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to leveraging our product portfolio to support the communities in which we operate. Our dedication to education runs throughout the year driven by our Buy a Pen Donate a Pen programme which has resulted in equipping millions of students with the necessary writing tools to achieve academic performance. Using writing tools has tremendous benefits including enhancing cognitive development, retaining information, and encouraging self-expression. Global Education Week is one of the many milestones that we commemorate throughout the year as part of our commitment to education.”

By proactively joining forces as a private sector, we can help shape the future of tomorrow and set the foundations for generations to come.”

Stationery Review 127 - Jinhao Shark (F) Fountain Pen (WriteSpoke) ZAR 55

Hi Friends,

Thanks to WriteSpoke for giving me this Jinhao Shark (F) Fountain Pen in Milk Tea colour. I really loved the colour and got the same in Fine Nib. The same comes with an ink converter as well so that you can fill it with your favourite ink colours. You can also buy all of them and fill them in the same colour as the body of the pens. The pen doesn't feel cheap and has a nice writing experience as well. The nib felt medium in my view as you will see in the video as well.

Stationery Review 127 - Jinhao Shark (F) Fountain Pen (WriteSpoke) ZAR 55

Product Details
  • Exquisite shark design: this Jinhao shark fountain pen features a delicate casing made of durable ABS plastic, making the pen more lightweight, and suitable for most people.
  • Length: 155 mm, cap: Screw-type, nib size: Fine nib, the nib is made of stainless steel, and wear-resistant features make it less likely to loosen and fall off. The Jinhao pen is equipped with a screw-type converter, you can use bottled ink or 2.6 mm disposable ink cartridges, ink not included for safety.
  • The seamless transition of colours creates a mesmerizing visual effect that sparks inspiration and ignites creativity. This shark writing pen is sure to leave a lasting impression.
  • Practical gift: You can use these beautiful fountain calligraphy pens as nice gift choices for your friends, parents, students, teachers, neighbours and colleagues, which are very practical in their daily life; and they will be happy to receive these thoughtful gifts.
WriteSpoke has a deal as well where you can buy all 12 pens for ZAR 550 as compared to each for ZAR 55. I really loved this unique design and this is a perfect one to initiate your kids or loved ones into the hobby of fountain pens. This pen is like Pilot Pluminix as it doesn't have clips but the fins of the Shark save the pen from rolling down. This pen can be used capped and uncapped. The pen is elongated on the cap side to create a shark face, eyes and gills. This pen can also be created into different shapes if you take out the cap. I have seen the same in the SWAN edition as well from Jinhao. Overall, this is a pen you must have as a collector and the nib is really a smooth writer.

Stationery Review 126 - Jinhao Safari 619 (F) Fountain Pen (WriteSpoke) ZAR 65

Hi Friends,

I got these Jinhao Safari 619 Fountain Pens in Fine nib from WriteSpoke. I got the same in Transparent Blue Colour. I do have Lamy Safari Fountain Pen as well and this one is almost the same. The cost of owning this pen is around only ZAR 65 whereas the other starts around ZAR 420 and Lamy special editions are priced around ZAR 540. The quality of plastic is good in these pens and the only difference is the clip which is a little bit shorter in Jinhao Safari. Lamy Safari doesn't come with an Ink converter which is a huge disappointment as you have to spend an extra ZAR 120 to buy one but here in Jinhao Safari 619, it comes at the same price as ZAR 65 only.

WriteSpoke quality for these Jinhao pens is top-class which I compared with the ones I bought from Ali Express as well. If you want me to showcase the issues I found with Ali Express, I can shoot the same for one of the pens I have from them and one from WriteSpoke. This one comes in plastic packaging and if you have a pen case then it's great to keep all of them together.
Stationery Review 126 - Jinhao Safari 619 (F) Fountain Pen (WriteSpoke) ZAR 65

Product Details
✅ Elegant Design - The pen adopts a classic streamlined shape and Macaron colour design, and the sturdy metal clip helps you attach the pen to a notebook or uniform pocket.
✅ Smooth Writing - Equipped with an Iridium Fine Nib, it writes like silk, smoothly, constantly, and utterly non-scratchy, suitable for daily writing or calligraphy writing.
✅ Well-Balanced Writer - The Pen only weighs 15.8g / 0.56 ounces. You can use it for long hours of writing without getting tired. It is also equipped with a 3.4mm converter for instant access to bottled ink.
✅ Craftmanship - Each pen was manually assembled and individually trial-written test by a craftsman for flawless quality before sending it out, and there may be a little ink residue on the nib.

WriteSpoke has deals if you want to buy all the 12 variants of different colours then the same are priced at ZAR 650 for all of the 12 colours (ZAR 54 for each pen). WriteSpoke has nib sizes for Fine and Extra Fine for this version of the fountain pen. They also have 5 Dark and 5 Light colour variants as well for ZAR 300 each for each pack means that each cost just ZAR 60 then.

My observation is that this is really a great initiation into the world of fountain pens and you can fill then the colours with different inks. I will propose that you get 2 first in both nib sizes (F & EF) and then buy the rest of the colours or if you are familiar with Jinhao nibs then directly order 12 of them. If you don't like any colour then share or gift it to someone close to also get them into a good writing experience using Fountain Pens.

Mandisa Shiceka High School Named as Winner of the 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Schools Competition

Hi Guys,

The 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow school’s competition concluded with the announcement of the overall winner on Wednesday, 2 October at Aha Kopanong Hotel and Conferencing Centre in Benoni, Johannesburg. Among the dignitaries at the function was the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr. Makgabo Mhaule.

The winners’ announcement followed a full day of rigorous presentations where the top 10 finalist schools showed off their prototypes to a panel of judges in a bid to win the competition.

Mandisa Shiceka High School, from Krugersdorp in Gauteng, took the honours after beating nine fellow finalists to be crowned the winners of the latest edition of the competition. In second place was Mbilwi Secondary School from Venda (Limpopo), which took first prize last year, while Adam’s College from Amanzimtoti (KwaZulu-Natal) rounded off the top three.

Run in partnership with the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), Solve for Tomorrow gives Grade 10 and 11 learners from underserved communities a unique opportunity to learn, and apply themselves as they solve some of the challenges in their communities through the practical application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). In this process and as intended by the competition, the learners get the level of exposure that shows them their areas of interest, while also gaining invaluable experience and skills that help harness their path toward a career in the STEM fields.

As the overall winner, Mandisa Shiceka was awarded a R100 000 cash prize, while second-placed, Mbilwi Secondary received R50 000, and Adam’s College got R30 000 for third place. All the cash prizes will go towards purchasing STEM equipment for each school, according to their various unique needs. Samsung placed the cherry on top by rewarding each learner from the top three teams with a new Samsung Galaxy device.

The participating schools identify problems within their communities and use STEM to solve them by conducting research and developing prototypes. Samsung further enabled the schools with resources and mentors to guide them through the process.

To emerge victorious, the learners of Mandisa developed an automated hydroponic structure that grows food without using soil. They identified food security as the main challenge because their township, Kagiso, is predominantly a mining environment, which affects the quality of the soil, air and water (resources necessary for growing healthy food). To mitigate this, their innovative system would use greenhouses as well as rainwater and boreholes as their source of water. “We came into the competition with a strong belief that we would win because we believe in our idea as a great solution – that’s the attitude that the entire team carried until the end. We’d love to thank Samsung for the opportunity to improve our community and learn some valuable skills,” said Makhosazana Mazibuko, team member and grade 10 learner.

Their educator, Nonki Motlogelwa, who also helped guide them in their project said, “When we entered, the excitement of winning this competition was high from all the learners. Even though they started feeling the pressure as soon as the work began, they always had faith in themselves and that pushed them through. We are proud especially because we won at our first attempt. I am so excited for the learners, they have shown so much courage, creativity and teamwork that I am sure they are heading in the right direction. Overall, the experience was amazing and thought-provoking.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister Mhaule said, “Well done to Samsung for recognising a gap and walking the talk by working to fill it with this initiative. Their efforts and commitment to contributing towards educating our youth are highly commendable. It’s easier to stand by and criticise but with such a programme, Samsung is showing that doing will always be better than talking. Every learner and school that participated in the Solve for Tomorrow competition is a winner, simply for getting up and doing something, to solve problems in their community and also skill themselves and prepare for the future. This initiative is not just a competition; it is a beacon of what social responsibility should be.”
Mandisa Shiceka High School Named as Winner of the 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Schools Competition
Solve for Tomorrow is one of Samsung’s corporate social investment initiatives and an ambitious effort to increase interest and proficiency in STEM, and help the country contribute to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Innovative thinking, creative problem-solving, and teamwork form part of what the competition seeks to encourage among the learners as they learn important skills that could benefit them in their future careers.

Lenhle Khoza, Manager for BBBEE & Transformation at Samsung highlighted the importance of corporates supporting the youth with such platforms that could be a catalyst for their futures and the country’s destiny. “Since its launch in 2023, Solve for Tomorrow has grown into an annual creative thinking playground for underprivileged high school learners. The youth is key to Africa’s development potential and it is our ambition as a business to spread the competition to more countries on the continent for transformative ways to solve societal issues through STEM initiatives like these. Now more than ever, we need to guide young learners on the value of STEM skills to solve the greatest issues impacting our communities. Samsung is a firm believer in the power of education to drive positive change and we remain committed to unlocking the potential of Africa’s abundant resource, the youth,” said Khoza.
