Currently performing to packed houses and rave reviews in Cape Town, renowned and award-winning funnyman Alan Committie will soon be heading to Jozi to stage his annual brand-new stand-up offering, as he reflects on the year that was.

Joburg audiences, get ready for his side-splitting Comedy Gold, on stage at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre from 19 February – 16 March 2025.

In Comedy Gold, Committie will once again award comedy medals to all the quibbles, foibles, outrageous inconsistencies and multiple inefficiencies that made up modern living in 2024/5.

From elections and appalling selections, through Air BnB’s and deleted WhatsApp messages but never ignoring Olympic shenanigans and dieticians, this show will be filled with all the customary wordplay, physical hi-jinx and surreal detours into fresh perspectives that you associate with this jester.

Also: a flipchart. Or even flipcharts.

Always.

Although not a trained athlete in the traditional sense, Committie is a highly respected and well regarded member of the Lower Blairgowrie Amateur Association 7th team badminton squad (reserves).

And apparently doesn’t eat carbs on a Tuesday.

Did I mention there will be flipchart(s)?

Committie comments; “Comedy Gold is my 27th solo stand-up show and this year’s band new comedy offering promises some silly surprises and variations on a theme. 

I attempt a tryptich of flipchart mind maps. THREE flipcharts at once! A feat never attempted before by any sane person. It’s school stationery taken to a new level. No CNA, just RSA.”

The show is coached by Chris Weare who may or may not be on a course of steroids but never for the reason you guessed.

The show runs from 19 February -16 March at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre in Fourways.

Performances are Wednesdays – Fridays @ 19h30, Saturdays @ 16h00 & 19h30, Sundays @ 15h00.

Tickets range from R150 – R260 and bookings are through Webtickets. Alternatively, you can contact the Box Office at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre at 011 511 1988.

Soaring together to save young lives - FlySafair and Wings and Wishes make lifesaving travel possible for children

For single mum, Lauren, getting her son Joel to his check-up at a health specialist in Cape Town every year can be a challenge. Joel suffered complications at birth, resulting in epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and speech and learning delays among other conditions. These annual visits are critical to his health but require a 940-kilometre drive from the family’s home in Komani (Queenstown), which can be long, expensive and risky should Joel need emergency medical care.

Thanks to a partnership between FlySafair and Wings and Wishes, a non-profit organisation dedicated to transporting critically and chronically ill children to receive lifesaving medical treatment at major centres, the stress of this journey has been alleviated for both Lauren and Joel, as well as hundreds of other families facing the same travel difficulties.

“Since 2021, FlySafair has worked with Wings and Wishes to transport children, who are deemed financially less fortunate, to receive essential medical services that are not available to them at a local level. In just over three years, we have assisted 260 children on 1 821 flights across South Africa, ensuring that they can receive the care they need in time and that their flying experience is as comfortable and enjoyable as possible,” says Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair.

For children who are flying for the first time, volunteers meet them at the airport to assist them and provide them with a backpack of toiletries, pyjamas, a soft toy and other items to make their hospital stay more comfortable. Often, they are personally welcomed and announced on the flight by the crew, where they get to meet the captain and receive their own set of wings. The airport and hospital transfers are organised by Wings and Wishes so children can attend their appointments smoothly from landing.

“Having a sick child causes tremendous stress and anxiety for parents. The financial strain and travelling regularly to another city for treatment is sometimes too overwhelming, with children defaulting on their treatment, getting very sick and even dying as a result. We believe that transport should never be a barrier to children receiving the expert medical care that they deserve, no matter where they live. That is why our partnership with FlySafair is so important. For example, when we receive a call that an organ is available for a transplant patient, within half an hour flights are booked and a child’s life is changed forever,” says Inge Human, manager at Wings and Wishes.

This experience is something that Namhla knows too well. Her daughter Luhle was diagnosed with biliary atresia as an infant, requiring a liver transplant. Living in the Eastern Cape, and unemployed, Namhla is able to fly to Johannesburg for Luhle’s check-ups with Wings and Wishes and FlySafair.

“I often missed her appointments in Joburg as I did not have the means to travel. This impacted her health, and I was so scared that my child would die. When I think of how Wings and Wishes has helped me, I get emotional every time, and when I travel with FlySafair, it feels like I have a new family,” she says.

Similarly, Prenisha’s son Suvaan was diagnosed with acute liver failure in 2023, and when his first liver transplant failed, he underwent a second surgery. Following complications to the procedure, he was in hospital for seven months, requiring intense physiotherapy and other treatments. In between this trauma, Prenisha lost her husband last year, becoming the sole breadwinner in the family.

“Suvaan must come to Johannesburg for his checkups and procedures as there are no doctors who can assist us in Durban. Wings and Wishes and FlySafair have come to my rescue by helping us with the flights, including priority boarding so there are no delays, and making certain that Suvaan is always comfortable. The support has allowed me to focus on the monthly medical bills and allowed my son to get all the help that he needs to live,” adds Prenisha.

The launch event saw the release of the HUAWEI Mate XT | ULTIMATE DESIGN, the world’s first commercial trifold smartphone. Stationery Review 136 - EXPERTS Agree This TRC Logo Brass Clip is a Game Changer

Hi Friends, 

I bought this Traveler's Company TRC Logo Brass Clip from Amazon.com for USD 19 including the taxes. Check this out as I saw both the designs at the Maido SF store in Japan Town, San Francisco, California. It was around USD 25 + taxes there so I thought of not buying the same from there. 

I am a fan of all things leather and brass/copper/silver/gold or any other precious metal. These metals make things durable and they last for a long time. My brother had the TRC Brass Ruler which he wanted to give to me but I didn't take it as I have many other metal rulers available with me. The quality of the ruler was amazingly great too so it led me to get one of the metal clips as well. 

My first experience with brass was the Kaweco Brass Sports Fountain Pen that my brother really liked and I handed the same to him as it was in his favourite medium-sized nib as well though the pen has a Fine nib but due to the weight or a regular, they writes a little bit bolder than the Japanese nibs. 

Coming back to this TRC Logo brass clip it keeps the journal page down due to its weight supporting the same. You can also use the same as a bookmark and also to keep your book open while your hands are not free. I really like that in case you want to take notes in your diary and it helps to keep the book open. 

Due to its square design, it's really a good one as it can go deep inside the journal/book and also has a hole in the back so that it can be attached to the journal or book covers so that you don't leave it behind. The clip doesn't have any design on the back which is a missed opportunity as it would be great to write something like MADE IN JAPAN or something of that sort.

Stationery Review 135 - A Decade Old Traveler's Company Leather Journal (Midori)

Hi Friends, 

I got this Midori Regular Size Leather Cover from my brother. Then I went to Maido SF Stationery Shop in Japan Town, San Francisco. I bought the refills from there for the Leather Cover and totally loved the same. 

Check it out as I set up my first time with Midori's Leather journal cover in brown colour. My brother bought the same way back in 2014-15 hence you will see the back of the cover is written with MIDORI MADE IN THAILAND as compared to the new ones which mention Traveler's Company. 

Judging by the product being a decade old now the quality can be felt as soon as you take it in your hands. It has grown into a unique texture of its own as it travelled from the USA to Australia and back over the last 10+ years. The Midori (TRC) leather cover is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime purchase in terms of quality etc. I am sure I am going to buy the passport version whenever I go to Japan. Earlier I was thinking that I was going to buy this one also from Japan but my brother offered me his and I could not decline once I held the same in my hands. 

I bought the refills for the same and they are numbered as well and the same was around USD 6.50 each including taxes. I bought 01, 02 and 03 because I just wanted to try them out first before venturing into another from the range. I paid around USD 170 at the shop. I bought an Urushi gel pen, fountain pens, inks, a mystery box, ink swatch paper and these journals. They are made of Midori Paper which can easily take all kinds of fountain pens. The paper is really soft and smooth to the touch and the writing glides on the same. I am writing in multiple lines and not following the one-lined pattern as I just want to write first and execute the ideas written rather than worrying about the beautification of the journal. It's my journal and I am not concerned about my handwriting till the time I can read it.

Stationery Review 134 - Fake Lamy Safari Fountain Pen (EF) for ZAR 11 Only

Hi Friends, 

I love fountain pens and I come across cheaper variants as well. I saw this Lamy Safari replica in shining metallic body colours for only ZAR 11 at China Mall. I wanted to showcase you in this video so I bought 2 of the 4 colours available in this range. Bought from Mellows F09 Shop in China Mall in Johannesburg. 

The pen nib is Extra Fine and comes with an ink cartridge. The blue ink colour is really not great and you will have to get your own ink to leave an impression on the paper. The pen writes smoothly but not as much as the original Lamy Safari EF I have in my favourite Yellow colour. 

In case you don't want to invest so much money around ZAR 450, this is the perfect pen to get into the hobby of writing with a good fountain pen. If you just want to test it out, this is a perfect way to start with a pen that's less than a cup of cappuccino. 

I have showcased many other fountain pens on my channel and in the coming days, I am shooting many more videos for you guys. I have invested a lot of money into my YouTube channel content and the stuff I want to showcase to you.

Stationery Review 133 - Pentonic Gel Pens in 12 Colours

Hi Friends, 

Thanks to Pentonic Driven by Design by Linc Pens for the assorted gel pens. These pens have nib tips from 0.6mm (Blue, Black, Red, Green) to 0.7mm (Orange, Brown, Turquoise, Pink, Violet, Lime Green) and 1.0mm for Silver and Gold colours.

I really loved that these pens come in different tip sizes or nib sizes from 0.6mm for basic daily usage pens to 0.7mm for special coloured pens and 1.0mm for Gold and Silver colours. 

Pentonic pens have really gained a lot of market in India and hopefully, we will see it soon in South Africa as well. They are really smooth writers and the ink flow is really great even in their ball pens as well.
